10.15 中华食品街 China Food Street

 

这三位姑娘决定去中华食品街看看，都卖些什么食品，以后让牛郎买什么心理也有个算计。娥黄问：“带牛郎去不？如果我们买的东西多，让他挑回来。”

小龙女回答：“不带他去！我们租一辆马车，马车夫知道路。如果我们自己走路去，三个多小时的路程，到那儿，我们就没力气溜达了！”

The three girls decided to check out the Chinese Food Street to see what kinds of food they sold, so they could plan on what to have Cowboy buy later. Beauty Yellow asked, “Should we bring Cowboy? If we buy a lot, he can carry it back.”

Little Dragoness replied, “No, we won't take him! We'll hire a carriage—the driver knows the way. If we walk there ourselves, it'll take over three hours. By the time we arrive, we'll be too exhausted to even stroll around!”

这仨人在食品街溜达了半天，把食品街的每一家店都仔细地看了。最后，小龙女和娥黄决定去喝羊汤，吃吊炉饼。女婴叨咕：“我第一次跟女人逛街，这也太磨叽了。忽然女人变成爷们了，要比赛吃羊粪，我的心理调整不过来呀！”

The three of them wandered around Food Street for ages, scrutinizing every single shop. In the end, Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow decided to go for mutton soup and oven-baked flatbread. Heroine grumbled, “This is my first time shopping with women, and they're taking forever. Suddenly the women turn into men, wanting to compete eating sheep dung—I just can't adjust to this!”

娥黄说：“羊粪可好看了，我小时候遇到羊粪，每次都捡起来看，没吃过，这次总算有机会了。”

女婴知道这条街和饭店的前后都有士兵看守，店里的顾客也有些是士兵扮的，没有安全疑虑。羊汤店里，人人都喝羊汤。女婴感觉没意思，出来站在阳台上看街景。

Beauty Yellow said, “Sheep dung is quite a sight. When I was little, I'd always pick it up to look at it whenever I came across some. I never ate it, but now I finally have the chance.”

Heroine knew soldiers guarded both ends of the street and the restaurant, and some customers inside were soldiers in disguise, so there were no safety concerns. Inside the mutton soup shop, everyone was drinking mutton soup. Finding it boring, Heroine stepped out onto the balcony to watch the street scene.

忽然街上来了一群外国人。女婴下楼看外国人。她看见一个印度人的头总是晃动，不但总是左右前后地晃，他的头还能斜着晃。

女婴走近那位印度人仔细看为什么他总是晃头呢？印度人说话了，女婴感觉一股刺鼻的咖喱味扑面而来，她迅速地后退。

Suddenly, a group of foreigners appeared on the street. Heroine went downstairs to look at them. She noticed an Indian man whose head kept shaking—not just side to side or back and forth, but also diagonally.

Heroine approached the Indian man to get a closer look. Why was he constantly shaking his head? As the Indian man spoke, Heroine was hit by a pungent curry smell. She quickly backed away.

外国人走远后，女婴感觉这事情不对：我就是看看他，他就释放暗器打我，这是什么暗器？我是不是中毒了？女婴就去追那几个外国人。追到了食品街的外面，遇见了她哥哥江南鹤。

江南鹤问女婴：“你找什么呢？”

女婴述说了刚才发生的事。

After the foreigners had walked far away, Heroine sensed something was wrong: I only looked at him, yet he fired a hidden weapon at me. What kind of weapon was that? Am I poisoned? Heroine set off to chase after those foreigners. She chased them to the edge of the food street, where she encountered her brother, River South Crane.

River South Crane asked Heroine, “What are you looking for?”

Heroine recounted what had just happened.

江南鹤回答：“你真幸运，这里不常有外国人，你第一次来就遇见了。他们是福建招商局邀请来的客人，今天刚到武汉，应该不会对你是放暗器。你感觉中毒了吗？”

女婴回答：“我只是感觉奇怪，应该没问题。”

River South Crane replied, “You're truly fortunate. Foreigners aren't often seen here, and you encountered them on your first visit. They're guests invited by the Fujian Merchants' Bureau, having just arrived in Wuhan today. They likely wouldn't target you with hidden weapons. Do you feel poisoned?”

Heroine answered, “I just feel strange, but I should be fine.”

3 理智与直觉 Reason and Intuition

江南鹤问女婴：“陕西羊汤怎么样？他们几个刚喝过，说味道很好！等你们离开了，我也去喝。”

女婴回答：“我没喝！哥！我不知道你被谁骗了。你说的那种陕西羊汤中的特殊佐料是羊粪。”

江南鹤回答：“我想不起来谁推荐的了，不能吧！”

River South Crane asked Heroine, “How's that Shanxi mutton soup? Those guys just had some and said it tasted great! Once you're gone, I'll go try it too.”

Heroine replied, “I didn't drink it! Brother! I don't know who tricked you. That ‘special seasoning’ in the Shanxi mutton soup you're talking about is sheep dung.”

River South Crane answered, “I can't remember who recommended it, but that can't be right!”

女婴述说了前文（参见10.12 节）牛郎所说的秘密。

几个喝了陕西羊汤的江南士兵开始感觉恶心，但是另外几个喝了陕西羊汤的江北士兵却表现平淡。一位将军发现了这个江南江北人的差别。

Heroine recounted the secret revealed by Cowboy in the preceding passage (See Section 10.12).

Several soldiers from the south of the river who had consumed the Shanxi mutton soup began to feel nauseous, while others from the north who had drunk the same soup showed no adverse effects. A general noticed this distinction between those from the south and north.

江南鹤反驳那位将军说：“我看不是那样的。小龙女和娥黄喝羊汤是因为相信理智，做事以智慧为导首。女婴不喝羊汤是因为她的行为跟随直觉。这两个长江北面的士兵没做呕是因为他们俩对我们江南的将军生疏，行为有些拘束。”

一位江北的士兵说：“我也感觉有些不舒服，但远远没达到作呕的程度。” 一位江南士兵说：“我在逗你们笑，就行为得夸张了些。”

River South Crane countered the general, saying, “I don't see it that way. Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow drank the mutton soup because they trust reason and let intelligence guide their actions. Heroine didn't drink the soup because she follows her instincts. Those two soldiers from the north of Yangtze River didn't vomit because they're unfamiliar with our Yangtze River south generals and feel a bit stiff around us."

A soldier from the north of Yangtze River said, "I also feel a little uncomfortable, but it's far from making me nauseous." A soldier from the south of Yangtze River said, "I was just trying to make you laugh, so I exaggerated a bit."

那位将军说：“看来我判断错了。那两位贵族小姐知道羊汤里面有羊粪还喝，真不简单。”

江南鹤回答：“我估计她们是在有意的校正直觉。”他转脸对女婴说：“她们都是逻辑思维型人，而你是运动思维行人中偏于用图像思考的人。你有你的优点和缺点。你得努力培养你的逻辑思维能力。”

The general said, "It seems I was wrong. Those two noble ladies knew there was sheep dung in the mutton soup and still drank it; they're quite something."

River South Crane replied, "I suspect they are intentionally correcting their intuition." He turned to Heroine and said, "Both of them are logical thinkers, while you are a kinesthetic thinker who tends to think in images. You have your strengths and weaknesses. You need to work hard to cultivate your logical thinking ability."

女婴问：“怎么培养？”

江南鹤回答：“比如喝陕西羊汤，让理智战胜直觉。比如女人怕老鼠。前些日子我和尧帝说起女人怕老鼠，尧帝说，‘女人怕老鼠是装的。’”

女婴回答：“我看她们俩怕老鼠是真的！”

River South Crane asked, "How do I raise them?"

River South Crane replied, "For example, by drinking Shanxi mutton soup, letting reason prevail over instinct. For example, women are afraid of mice. The other day I talked to Yao Creator about women being afraid of mice, and he said, 'Women are only pretending to be afraid of mice.'"

Heroine replied, "I think they're genuinely afraid of mice!"

江南鹤回答：“你的这个表现就是跟随直觉得缺点。她们俩在典兵学院的时候解剖过很多老鼠，甚至人体，怎么可能会怕老鼠呢！”

女婴惊讶地问：“她们俩都解剖过死人？”

River South Crane replied, "This behavior is a flaw stemming from following your intuition. Those two dissected many rats, even human bodies, when they were at their Codex Soldier Academy. How could they possibly be afraid of rats!"

Heroine asked in surprise, "They both dissected dead people?"

江南鹤回答：“尧帝说，典兵学院都有那样的训练课程。那样的课程很贵，所以你们重庆士官学校没有。尧帝说她们是装习惯了。不信你看她们一个人时看见老鼠和蜘蛛的表现。她们就不害怕了，上去就打死！我是说，女婴！你得向她们俩学，你又该和男婴见面了，你也学会得怕老鼠或蜘蛛！”

River South Crane replied, "Yao Creator said that their Codex Soldier Academy had such training courses. Those courses were very expensive, so your Chongqing Sergeant School didn't have them. Yao Creator said they've just gotten used to pretending. If you don't believe me, watch how they react when they see mice and spiders alone. They aren't afraid at all—they just go right up and kill them! I mean, Heroine! You should learn from them. You'll be meeting Hero again soon—you need to learn to be afraid of mice or spiders too!"

4 二郎神和女婴 Second Wolf God and Heroine

女婴回答：“我该回去了，以免她们俩出来找我，找不到。”

这时士兵来报告说，娥黄和小龙女跟着女娲的人走了。

江南鹤对女婴说：“走，我们去蛇洞口旁边等她俩。她俩出来找你时，你就假装找着她们俩了。”

Heroine replied, "I should go back now, lest they come looking for me and can't find me." Just then, a soldier came to report that Beauty Yellow and Little Dragoness had left with Nuwa’s men.

River South Crane said to Heroine, "Let's go wait for them near the entrance of the snake cave. When they come out looking for you, just pretend you've found them."

一位将军问江南鹤：“我从来不知道您还懂这个，从哪儿学来的？”

江南鹤回答：“十几年前尧帝来江南寻找女婴和男婴，我跟她学的。女婴惊讶地问：“咱俩小时候，跟我说话的那位巫山神女就是现在的尧帝吗？”

A general asked River South Crane, “I never knew you understood this. Where did you learn it?”

River South Crane replied, “Over a decade ago, Yao Creator came to the Yangtze River South searching for Heroine and Hero. I learned it from her.”

Heroine exclaimed in surprise, “So that ‘Wushan Goddess’ who spoke to me when we were children—that was Yao Creator?”

江南鹤回答：“是的！那时她是咱们龙国的大元帅。她忽然宣布巫山神女要来江南寻找女婴，咱爸他们那些将军们还以为她是在开玩笑呢！接待的时候，他们才知道巫山神女就是三公主（即熬忖，尧帝）。那时，咱爹他们认为她和二郎神刚结婚，是来咱百花谷度蜜月的。随后巫山神女和二郎神看了很多孩子。她看了你之后，说你和二郎神是一样的人，向咱父母请求让二郎神收你为徒。当时咱们百花谷的长老们认为这就是三公主（即尧帝）想取悦新驸马二郎神，很普通的事，就答应了。”

River South Crane replied, “Yes! At that time, she was the Grand Marshal of our Dragon Kingdom. She suddenly announced that the Goddess of Wushan was coming to Yangtze River South to find Heroine. Our father and the other generals thought she was joking! When they received her, they learned that the Goddess of Wushan was the Third Princess (i.e., Aocun, Yao Creator). At that time, our father thought she and Second Wolf God had just gotten married and were on their honeymoon in our Hundred Flowers Valley. Afterwards, the Goddess of Wushan and Second Wolf God saw many children. After seeing you, she said that you and Second Wolf God are the same kind of people and asked our parents to let Second Wolf God take you as his disciple. At that time, the elders of our Hundred Flowers Valley thought that this was just the Third Princess wanting to please her new husband Second Wolf God, which was a very ordinary affair, so they agreed.”

江南鹤继续说：“女婴，那时，你生病了。当时，巫山神女就让很多御医为你诊治。随后你还是常常生病。二郎神在家里常常问尧帝，‘我的那个徒弟现在怎么样了？’‘我的继承人的病情有没有好转？’所以尧帝定期派御医来看你。”

女婴惊讶地说：“还有这事，我怎么没有任何记忆？”

River South Crane continued, "Heroine, back then, you were sick. At that time, the Goddess of Wushan had many imperial physicians treat you. Afterwards, you continued to fall ill frequently. Second Wolf God often asked Yao Creator at home, 'How is my disciple doing now?' 'Has my successor's condition improved?' Therefore, Yao Creator regularly sent imperial physicians to see you."

Heroine exclaimed in surprise, "Is that so? How come I have no memory of it?"

江南鹤回答：“那时候你还小；御医的长相也没什么特别的，就是位医生。那时，你和那两位御医很熟。你长大后，身体就变得强壮了，不生病了；二郎神就不叨咕你了，尧帝就不派御医来看你了。现在我懂了，这一切都是真的。如果一切顺利，20年之后，你就是中华共和国第二代天蓬元帅，那时你就是真正的女婴（即女宝）了。”

River South Crane replied, "You were still young then; the imperial physicians didn't look particularly special, just doctors. Back then, you were quite familiar with those two imperial physicians. As you grew up, you became stronger and stopped getting sick; Second Wolf God stopped nagging you, and Yao Creator stopped sending imperial physicians to see you. Now I understand—it's all true. If everything goes smoothly, in 20 years, you will be the second-generation ‘Celestial Ceiling Marshal’ of Republic of China, and you will be a real Nuying (i.e., Heroine, Baby Girl, Woman Treasure).”

10.15-5 苏州商会 Suzhou Chamber of Commerce

小龙女和娥黄在陕西羊汤店出来后就在饭店的门口等女婴。两个名叫文官和刺客的夏国人走了过去，忽然他俩相互议论：“哎！那位姑娘好像是夏娃！”

小龙女认出了他俩，赶忙迎了过去，说：“两位家叔，在这里我叫小龙女！你们俩怎么来这里了？”

After leaving the Shanxi Mutton Soup shop, Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow waited for Heroine at the restaurant entrance. Two men from Xia Kingdom, one called Literary-Official and the other called Assassin, passed by and suddenly murmured to each other: “Hey! That girl looks like Eve!”

Little Dragoness recognized them and hurried over, saying, “Two family uncles, my name is ‘Little Dragoness’ here! What brings you both here?”

文官和刺客高兴地回答：“我们俩现在是夏国选送过来建设新中国的年轻干部。武汉的菜太辣，我们俩常来这里吃家乡菜。小龙女！你什么时候来的，怎么没在夏国人同乡会见过你呀？”

Literary-Official and Assassin cheerfully replied, “We're both young cadres sent by Xia to help build the new China. The food in Wuhan is too spicy, so we often come here for hometown dishes. Little Dragoness! When did you arrive? How come we never saw you at the Xia Countrymen's Association?”

小龙女回答：“我来武汉没多久，不知道这里有个夏国人同乡会。”

刺客高兴地说：“那走吧，叔叔带你去认认门，想家了就过来玩，那里有很多你的亲戚！”

Little Dragoness replied, "I haven't been in Wuhan long and didn't know there was a Xia Kingdom Hometown Association here."

Assassin happily said, "Then let's go! Uncle will show you the door. Come visit whenever you miss home; there are many of your relatives there!"

文官和刺客领着小龙女和娥黄离开了中华食品街。他俩走得很快，等小龙女和娥黄跟了过来，说：“就这儿！”说着，他俩进去了。

小龙女看门牌子上写着 “苏州商会”，犹豫了。书中交代，苏州是夏国前朝（吴国）的首都，那里有很多夏国的政治犯。娥黄怀疑地问小龙女：“他们俩是什么人，你认识他们俩多长时间了。”

Literary-Official and Assassin led Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow away from Zhonghua Food Street. They walked quickly, and when Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow caught up, they said, "This is it!" Then they went inside.

Little Dragoness hesitated when she saw the sign on the door that read "Suzhou Chamber of Commerce." The book explains that Suzhou was the capital of the former Xia Dynasty (Wu Kingdom), and many Xia political prisoners lived there. Beauty Yellow asked Little Dragoness suspiciously, "Who are those two people? How long have you known them?"

小龙女回答：“他们俩是女娲阿姨在鄮县的属下，我认识他们俩十多年了！”

娥黄问：“他们俩是鄮县人，你怎么认识的？”

小龙女回答：“他们常接送女娲阿姨的大女儿虞姬到鲵丸宫。杭州没人认识他们，所以他们一来，我就跟他们到皇宫的外面去玩。”

Little Dragoness replied, "They are both subordinates of Aunt Nuwa in Mao County. I've known them for over ten years!"

Beauty Yellow asked, "They're from Mao County, how do you know them?"

Little Dragoness replied, "They often escort Aunt Nuwa's eldest daughter, Muse, to Salamander Bolus Palace. Nobody in Hangzhou knows them, so whenever they come, I go with them to play outside the palace."

这时刺客出来了，说：“文官进去报告去了，告诉认识你的人，你现在名叫小龙女，别说错了。你们俩怎么不进去？”

看见她们俩在看“苏州商会”的牌子，刺客说：“啊！你们俩刚来武汉，不知道情况。吴国的后人从第六代起开始就不再是政治犯了。现在苏州有很少的几个政治犯。我们是租的他们的房子，让他们有些收入（注5）。这周围都是我们的人，很安全。”

At this moment, the assassin came out and said, "The civil official went inside to report, telling those who know you that your name is now Little Dragoness, don't get it wrong. Why aren't you two going in?"

Seeing them looking at the "Suzhou Chamber of Commerce" sign, the assassin said, "Ah! You two just arrived in Wuhan and don't know the situation. The descendants of the Wu Kingdom, from the sixth generation onwards, are no longer political prisoners. There are only a handful of political prisoners in Suzhou now. We rent their homes, providing them with some income (Note 5). This area is filled with our people, so it's very safe."

注，10.14-5，前文2.7.4 《封神榜 》中，炎帝（即玉皇大帝，如来佛祖）向原始天尊蔻珠提出了解决苏州政治犯问题的请求，认为五服以内是亲戚，五服以外不是亲戚了。本文描述蔻珠随后对苏州政治犯的政策做出了调整。

Note, 10.14-5: In the preceding section 2.7.4 of The Investiture of the Gods, Yan Creator (i.e., Turquoise Great Creator, Shakyamuni Buddha) requested Primitive Sky Honor to resolve the issue of political prisoners in Suzhou, arguing that those within five generations of kinship are relatives, while those beyond are not. This section describes Kouzhu's subsequent policy adjustments regarding Suzhou's political prisoners.

这时一位认识小龙女的亲戚迎接出来了。小龙女跟着他们通过了一个狭长的过道，来到了后堂，见到了一些来武汉工作的年轻干部。随后，小龙女又跟着一位女性亲戚来到了更后面的房间，见到了许多她不认识的亲戚。

小龙女说和朋友走散了，需要赶回陕西羊汤店门前，等那位朋友。亲戚们得知小龙女当晚要返回古墓，就催促她离开，因为回程很远，走夜路，半夜才能到家。

小龙女和娥黄出了苏州商会没多久，就遇见了正在寻找她们俩的女婴。

At that moment, a relative who knew Little Dragoness came out to greet her. Following them through a narrow passageway, she entered the inner hall where she met several young cadres who had come to work in Wuhan. Later, accompanied by a female relative, she proceeded to a room further back and encountered many relatives she did not recognize.

Little Dragoness explained she had lost her friend and needed to hurry back to the front of the Shanxi Mutton Soup Restaurant to wait for her. Upon learning Little Dragoness planned to return to the ancient tomb that very night, the relatives urged her to leave immediately. The journey back was long, and traveling at night meant she wouldn't reach home until midnight.

Shortly after Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow exited the Suzhou Chamber of Commerce, they encountered Heroine who had been searching for them.
