10.12 天禽地补十八篓 Sky Bird Earthly Supplement and 18 Baskets

 

女婴回来了，带回了她射下的一只鹰和一条蛇。

小龙女迷惑地问：“你射它干啥？也没什么肉！？”

女婴回答：“它叼着这条活着的毒蛇在天上飞。我怕这只毒蛇掉下来，就在咱这里活下来了。人们不注意时就可能被咬伤了。来，今天我给你们俩做 ‘龙凤斗’。”

小龙女说：“我不同意！”

Heroine came back with an eagle and a snake she had shot down.

Little Dragoness said in confusion: "Why did you shoot it? There is no meat!?"

Heroine replied: "It was flying in the sky with this living venomous snake in its mouth. I was afraid that the venomous snake would fall and survive here. It was bitten when people were not paying attention. Come, today I will cook a 'Dragon Fighting Phoenix' for the two of you."

Little Dragoness said: "I don't agree!"

10.12-1 天禽 Sky Bird

娥黄对女婴说：“如果你同意让牛郎清理这鹰和蛇，我就同意你做 ‘龙凤斗’。牛郎以前在饭店工作时，清理过鹰和毒蛇。”

随后，女婴不情愿地同意了让牛郎来清理鹰和毒蛇，她自己在旁边看着。

Beauty Yellow said to Heroine, “If you agree to let Cowboy clean up the eagle and snake, I will agree to let you cook the ‘Dragon Fighting Phoenix.’ Cowboy cleaned up eagles and poisonous snakes when he worked at the restaurant before.”

After a while, Heroine reluctantly agreed to let Cowboy clean up the eagle and poisonous snake, while she watched from the side.

这三位姑娘吃龙凤斗时都很高兴。小龙女说：“我一边吃一边想像女婴射这只叼着蛇在天上飞的鹰时的图画，那也太潇洒啦！”

娥黄回答：“潇洒！她的这一碗菜把我这几个月做饭的功劳都给比下去了！要不那你也射点儿啥东西！也潇洒一回！”

The three girls were very happy as they ate the dragon and phoenix dish. Little Dragoness said, “As I eat, I imagine the picture of Heroine shooting the eagle flying in the sky with a snake in its beak. That's so cool!”

Beauty Yellow replied: "How cool! Her dish has surpassed all my cooking efforts over the past few months! Why don't you shoot something too! Be cool also!"

小龙女回答：“我射什么？即便是我遇到了鹰叼着蛇在天上飞，我也肯定射不下来！我射 ‘地补（即乌鸡）’！肉多！”

Little Dragoness replied, “What should I shoot? Even if I saw an eagle carrying a snake in the sky, I couldn’t shoot it down! I'll shoot ‘Earth Supplement (i.e., Black Chicken)’! It has a lot of meat!”

过了一会儿，小龙女又叨咕：“我感觉没吃饱！咱们的食品单一。”

娥黄说：“牛郎说，‘中华食品一条街那儿有来自全国各地的地方风味’，就是离咱这里太远。”

女婴插嘴道：“我哥哥对我说了两次了。那里的陕西羊汤和吊炉饼很好吃！ 我一直没找到那条街！”

After a while, Little Dragoness muttered again: "I don't feel full! Our food is monotonous."

Beauty Yellow said: "Cowboy said, 'There are local flavors from all over the country on the Zhonghua Food Street', but it's too far from here."

Heroine interrupted, "My brother has told me twice that the Shanxi goat soup and hanging oven cakes there are delicious! I have never found that street!"

小龙女说：“让牛郎去买，拿回来！”

娥黄笑着说：“牛郎跟我说了陕西羊汤的秘密。假如我不告诉你们，你们以后肯定会怪我！ 陕西羊汤有一种调料是羊粪。”

女婴反驳道：“中华食品一条街是尧皇推广食品卫生法的模范工程；怎么可能有羊粪呢！？”

Little Dragoness said, “Let Cowboy go buy it and bring it back!”

Beauty Yellow smiled and said, “Cowboy told me the secret of Shanxi goat soup. If I don't tell you, you will blame me later! Shanxi goat soup has a seasoning is sheep dung.”

Heroine retorted: "China Food Street is a model project of White-King Creator Yao to promote the Food Hygiene Law; how could there be sheep dung!?"

娥黄说：“牛郎说的，中华食品局研究了陕西羊汤，他们认为羊粪是那种羊汤的一种佐料，允许他们放入。牛郎他们不信，特意去了他们的厨房。在厨师没注意时，他们掀开汤锅看了。里面确实漂着很多羊粪。”

小龙女说：“如果是这样，我不介意汤里面有羊粪，让牛郎买回来些，尝尝。”

女婴说：“我不吃！”

Beauty Yellow said: "Cowboy said that the China Food Bureau studied Shanxi goat soup and believed that sheep dung is a condiment of that goat soup, so they were allowed to put it in. Cowboy and his men didn't believe it and went to their kitchen. When the chef wasn't paying attention, they opened the soup pot and looked. There was indeed a lot of sheep dung floating in it."

Little Dragoness said, “If that's the case, I don't mind if there's sheep dung in the soup. Let Cowboy buy some and try it.”

Heroine said, “I won't eat it!”

娥黄说：“我也不介意里面羊汤里面有羊粪。我听说有几种中药里面有羊粪的成分。不过食品街里很多风味食品，例如北京的全聚德烤鸭（如图10.12）。据说是这家店主送这种烤鸭为靖王武大郎祝寿时，石矶娘娘（潘金莲）给取的名字。”

Beauty-Yellow said: "I don't mind the sheep dung in the goat soup too. I heard that some Chinese medicines contain sheep dung. However, there are many local specialties in the food street, such as Beijing All-Virtue Roasted Duck (see Figure 10.12).

It is said that the name was given by Queen Stone Jetty (Goldthread Pan) when the owner of this shop sent this roasted duck to celebrate the birthday of Jing King Martial Big Wolf.

小龙女兴奋地说：“我大伯母喜欢的，那肯定错不了。全聚德是什么意思？”

娥黄回答：“据说店家向靖王夸口，‘我这烤鸭色香味俱全，具有25种优点。’ 石矶娘娘品尝后说，‘25是具德（参见13.4.4 二十五有）的数，全聚德是个好名字。’这种全聚德烤鸭就在北京出名了。”

Little Dragoness said excitedly, “If my aunt likes it, it must be good. What does All-Virtue mean?”

Beauty Yellow replied, "It is said that the shop owner boasted to Jing King, 'My roast duck has perfect color, aroma, and taste, and has 25 advantages.' After tasting it, Queen Stone Jetty said, '25 is the number of All Virtues (see 13.4.4 Twenty-five Haves), so All-virtue is a good name.' That's how All-Virtue Roasted Duck became famous in Beijing."

小龙女问女婴：“那我们就吃全聚德烤鸭，怎么样？”

女婴说：“我可不挑食；除了羊粪，我什么都吃。全聚德烤鸭只能吃一顿。很远的路，让牛郎再买点儿保质期长一些的食品。”

Little Dragoness asked Heroin, “So shall we eat All-Virtue Roasted Duck?” 

Heroine said, “I'm not picky; I'll eat anything except sheep dung. All-Virtue Roasted Duck can only be eaten once. It's a long journey, so let Cowboy buy some food with a longer shelf life.”

 

10.12-2 地补 Earthly Supplement

一天娥黄让牛郎买只黑鸡，拴在后山的槐荫树上。牛郎回来后说买的黑鸡有三根白羽毛，用不用把这三根白羽毛拔掉。娥黄说，“别拔，就那样吧！”

中午，小龙女和女婴回来吃饭时，娥黄叨咕：“后山槐荫树上有一只黑鸡，停留在那里很长时间了，不知道现在还在不在？”

One day, Beauty Yellow asked Cowboy to buy a black chicken and tie it in the locust tree on the back hill. When Cowboy returned, he said the black chicken had three white feathers and asked if they should be plucked. Beauty Yellow said, "Don't pluck them, leave them as they are!"

At noon, when Little Dragoness and Heroine returned for lunch, Beauty Yellow muttered, “There's a black chicken perched on the locust tree in the back mountain. It's been there for quite some time. I wonder if it's still there now?”

小龙女高兴地叫嚷着：“我要把它射下来！”她真的射中了；但是鸡腿被绑住了，吊在了树上。女婴补射一箭，射断了绳子。小龙女跑过去查看，看见了黑鸡的身上有三根白羽毛，不高兴了。

Little Dragoness excitedly shouted, "I'm going to shoot it down!" She hit it; however, the chicken's leg was tied, and it was hanging from the tree. Heroine fired another arrow, severing the rope. Little Dragoness ran over to check and saw three white feathers on the black chicken's body, and she was displeased.

她俩回来后，小龙女没跟娥黄说话，就回自己的房间了。女婴跟了进去，询问发生了什么事。小龙女不回答。娥黄也进到了房间。小龙女生气地对女婴说：“你问她！”

询问了多次，女婴才知道小龙女生气的原因是那只黑鸡身上有三根白羽毛（不是 “地补”），而娥黄却没有拔掉那三根白羽毛！女婴叨咕着：“我还以为发生了什么事呢！就是三根白羽毛没被拔掉，我去拔了！”

After they returned, Little Dragoness didn't speak to Beauty Yellow and went back to her room. Heroine followed her in and asked what had happened. Little Dragoness didn't answer. Beauty Yellow also entered the room. Little Dragoness angrily said to Heroine, "Ask her!" After several inquiries, Heroine finally learned that the reason Little Dragoness was angry was that the black chicken had three white feathers (not "Earthly Supplement "), and Beauty Yellow hadn't plucked them! Heroine muttered, "I thought something had happened! It's just that three white feathers hadn't been plucked, so I go and pluck them!"

女婴去到后院看见黑鸡不见了，就只剩下一堆鸡毛了。她回到厨房找鸡。牛郎问：“你在找什么？”

女婴叨咕：“那只鸡怎么不见了？”

牛郎回答：“在锅里呢！”

女婴大叫：“哎呀！你小子可真能祸害人，你把鸡放在锅里干什么？”

牛郎回答：“炖鸡呀！”

Heroine went to the backyard and saw the black chicken was gone, leaving only a pile of feathers. She returned to the kitchen to look for the chicken. Cowboy asked, “What are you looking for?”

Heroine muttered, “Where did that chicken go?”

Cowboy replied, “It's in the pot!”

Heroine cried out, “Oh my! You rascal, what a mess you've made! Why did you put the chicken in the pot?”

Cowboy answered, “To stew it, of course!”

女婴生气地要掀开锅盖查看，小龙女和娥皇大叫：“喂！锅都已经冒气了，你别掀锅盖放气啊！”

女婴叫嚷着解释说：“咱们在屋里说话才两三分钟，他就把鸡毛拔了，开膛破肚，剁了，炖上了！”

牛郎出去了。

娥黄说：“你们回来时，我就在烧水。你们射到鸡回来时，我都已经把放了佐料的水烧开了。

Heroine angrily tried to lift the pot lid to check, but Little Dragoness and Beauty Yellow shouted, “Hey! The pot's already steaming—don't lift the lid and let the steam out!”

Heroine yelled back in explanation, “We've only been talking inside for two or three minutes, and he's already plucked the chicken, gutted it, chopped it up, and started stewing it!”

Cowboy had gone outside.

Beauty Yellow said, “I was boiling water when you returned. By the time you shot the chicken and brought it back, I'd already brought the seasoned broth to a rolling boil.”

女婴回答：“问题是，我进屋转身出来时，他已经把鸡剁了，放在锅里了。算了，今天中午我不吃饭了，免得吃一嘴鸡毛！”

小龙女说：“牛郎在饭店工作过。我早就听说过，饭店里的人屠宰动物，又快又好。今天才亲眼看见了，太神奇了！”

Heroine replied, “The thing is, by the time I turned around and came back out, he'd already chopped up the chicken and put it in the pot. Forget it—I'm skipping lunch today, so I don't end up eating a mouthful of chicken feathers!”

Little Dragoness said, “Cowboy used to work at a restaurant. I'd heard stories about how fast and skilled restaurant workers are at butchering animals. Today I saw it with my own eyes—it's amazing!”

 

10.12-3 十八篓18 Baskets

一天晚上，小龙女叨咕，买点咸萝卜，狗宝咸菜什么的；这晚上吃点心感觉淡。娥黄回答：“好，另外我听牛郎说，‘锦州小菜’挺好。小黄瓜才一寸多长，还长在蔓上；那黄瓜蔓很嫩，也能吃。而且那种咸菜装在篓里，保质期很长。

小龙女高兴地说：“买十八篓！几千年后，我们的子孙议论：我们中华民族是从三个女人开始的。那时候她们吃‘天禽地补十八篓’——这多好听！”

One evening, Little Dragoness muttered about buying some pickled radish, dogwood pickles, and such; the evening snacks felt too bland. Heroine replied, “Alright. Also, I heard from Cowboy that ‘Jinzhou Pickles’ are quite good. The cucumbers are only about an inch long and still growing on the vines; those tender vines are edible too. Plus, those pickles come packed in baskets, so they keep for a long time.”

Little Dragoness said happily, “Buy eighteen baskets! Thousands of years from now, our descendants will say: Our Chinese nationality began with three women. Back then, they ate ‘Sky Bird Earthly Supplement and 18 Baskets’—how splendid that sounds!”

第二天中午，娥黄对牛郎说：“早上忘记跟你说了！明天，你再去买筋饼豆腐脑，和十八篓锦州小菜。路远，一次多买些，你看什么好就买。你买根扁担，挑着回来。”

牛郎回答：“好！不过那种锦州小菜很咸，跟盐似的，吃不了多少。你们仨，一篓就够吃一个月。咱们买很贵，咱卖就不值钱了。”

The next day at noon, Beauty Yellow said to Cowboy, “I forgot to tell you this morning! Tomorrow, go buy some tendon cakes, tofu pudding, and eighteen baskets of Jinzhou pickles. Since it's a long trip, buy plenty at once—just get whatever you like. Get yourself a carrying pole to haul it back.”

Cowboy replied, “Alright! But those Jinzhou pickles are incredibly salty—like eating salt itself. You can't eat much of them. Just one basket lasts the three of you a whole month. We pay a fortune for them, but when we sell them, they're practically worthless.”

娥黄看了看小龙女，但小龙女没说话，转身进屋去了。娥黄说：“那就买三篓吧！”

牛郎离开后，娥黄进屋询问小龙女。小龙女气愤地说：“这个死小子太气人了，她把我精心编制的 ‘天禽地补十八篓’传说故事给破坏了。

Beauty Yellow glanced at Little Dragoness, but Little Dragoness didn't speak and turned to go inside. Beauty Yellow said, "Then let's buy three baskets!"

After Cowboy left, Beauty Yellow went inside to ask Little Dragoness. Little Dragoness angrily said, "That brat is infuriating! He ruined the legend of ‘Sky Bird Earthly Supplement and 18 Baskets’ that I carefully crafted!"
